FIRE FOSSILS

This photographic series traces a journey of transformation, sparked by a solo train ride from Glenwood, Colorado, to Seattle, Washington, in 2020 at the height of COVID. Drawn to the ancient wisdom of the California Redwoods, the artist found inspiration in Peter Wohlleben’s The Hidden Life of Trees, a book that would deeply influence the work. A later visit to the charred remains of the Lake Christine fire in Basalt, Colorado, revealed a haunting silence—an absence left in the wake of destruction. A single, fossil-like branch became the catalyst for experimentation with cyanotype printing, its imprints evoking scars, x-rays, and ghostly echoes of what once was. Through these images, the series explores fire’s duality—both creator and destroyer—and serves as a meditation on the profound impact of even the smallest actions in shaping our world.
